A minor rift was detected in sector 9G of Armageddon Secundus, 600 miles north-east of Hive Infernus, 0900 hours, 2.832.118.M42, likely the effect of an intentional warp core breach.

A contingency team was immediately dispatched to investigate, consisting of a squad of Death Korps veterans, yet which encountered fierce resistance by an already fortified Chaos Space Marine force, supplanted by a slew of heretics. The team identified the presence of a core breach device and scrambled to destroy it, but was promptly routed by the defenders’ overwhelming firepower.

Having received the contingency team’s distress call, a specialist section of the Cadian 83rd under the command of Enquêteur-Commissaire Adranya Kyrene of the Ordo Malleus was called up from the besieged Hive Infernus, reaching the site in approximately ten hours. Kyrene’s team succeded in annihilating the hostile forces, leaving no survivors, but found that the breach had been completed, that the device had been evacuated, and that a major detachment of chaos spawn had penetrated the sector, supplanted by a surge of heretic Astartes.

The intelligence we received from Enquêteur-Commissaire Kyrene paints a rather dire picture. By all accounts, the Chaos forces are coordinating a series of warp rifts, bolstered by hitherto unknown rituals of dark magick, ultimately in an attempt to bring forth a greater daemonic incursion.

Extraordinarily, Lord General Militant, the Inquisition seems ready to cooperate with us fully in this situation. This is likely indicative of the unprecedented threat level and the gravity of our predicament, but we’re mainly in the dark regarding the deeper issues.

What we do know, however, is that sector 9G is in significant peril. Both the orks and the tyranids have encircled it and perform continuous forays thereinto, and should it fall into the hands of either, there will likely be no stopping of the daemonic incursion.

I therefore respectfully implore you, Lord General Militant, to divert the necessary resources in support of thoroughly securing and purifying the pertinent sector. As for now, all we have in the field are Commissar Kyrene’s detachment and a harrowed contingent of the Death Korps, and in all honesty, Engal, we truly need the Adeptus Astartes here.

Lord Castellan Yarius Endellesia

Report on the ongoing skirmishes in sector 9G, Armageddon Secundus, 600 miles north-east of Hive Infernus

While we have so far been unsuccessful in neutralizing or identifying the core breach device, no further rifts have been detected. This is likely in part due to a curious turn of events in which a contingent of Tau introduced itself into the theatre of operations, intentionally and stubborny harassing the Chaos forces after an initial surprise attack. According to intelligence, a key Chaos operative was captured by the Tau. While subsequently liberated, this has delayed the corrupted Astartes, and forced them to reallocate resources.

We would normally have been able to capitalize on this situation, possibly expelling the Chaos forces from the sector entirely, were it not for the sudden entrance of the Orks. Having circumscribed the sector for weeks, making repeated inroads thereinto, attacking and pillaging unsecure supply infrastructure and transports, they suddenly and audaciously assaulted a key supply depot deep in the territory. Kyrene's team was scrambled under the command of her second, a Lt. Kirov, yet was forced to retreat as they were severely undersupplied, pulling back to an adjacent Mechanicus cache with just one operational lasgun between them.

Kyrene's team was subsequently pursued and ambushed by the orks a few hours later, yet capably routed the alien against quite dismal odds, which speaks plainly of Lt. Kirov's abilities.

Having separated our troops from the consolidating Chaos forces, the ork horde now reversed, mounting a characteristically unpredictable while somewhat foolhardy assault on the overextended Chaos warriors. Apparently, however, the orks were inches from victory here, which would possibly have ended the entire operation, but the battle turned on a surprising chance occurrence of friendly fire, where a stray grenade aborted a crucial advance, allowing the Chaos forces to lay down heavy shelling and force their assailants into retreat.

All in all, Lord General Militant, the situation in the sector is yet dire. While the developments have been somewhat in our favour, the additional factions involved greatly increases situational uncertainty and threatens our objectives. Kyrene's team is indeed quite capable but now seems to lack support entirely as the Death Korps detachment has faulted its last three radio checks. Without the Astartes, I fear this operation will be lost, with an outcome horrendous beyond our comprehension.

ἐν Χριστῷ,
Lord Castellan Yarius Endellesia
